NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (WKBW) – A vehicle entered the Niagara River near the edge of American Falls Wednesday afternoon.

A woman has died after her car plunged into the Niagara River near the edge of American Falls in Niagara.

A New York State Police officer said at noon a vehicle was reported over the Niagara River near the bridge at NYS Dispatch Park and a pedestrian was found and slid down the throat of the American decoy. Eyewitnesses said that there was a woman in the car.

Police said the NYSP rapid water squad was unable to recover the vehicle due to its location, prompting a response from the U.S. Coast Guard, which conducted the recovery.

According to police, a local woman in her late 60s was driving the vehicle and was pronounced dead. The car plunged into the river between the footbridges.

The vehicle was about 50 yards from the collapsed bank, police said. New York State Police say it was the most expensive vehicle ever to sink into the water. An investigation into how the car ended up in the river is ongoing. The other owners of the vehicle were not involved.
