It’s no secret that emoticons play an important role in today’s everyday communication. From a user experience perspective, emoji Emoji are a commonly recognized language that adds emotional nuances to communication. It’s integrated throughout digital life, and in 2018 Chrome took the shortcut. Enter quickly on your desktop. But this is a problem for Chrome OS users. Clicking the context menu launches the on-screen keyboard, which isn’t intuitive with a mouse. However, that will soon change as Google releases an emoji picker just for Chrome OS.
We’ve deployed it on the Chromium Gerrit and more details have been released from the repository over the past few weeks. We’ve got a lot of backend changes and UI improvements in our latest Chrome OS Canary build, bringing it closer to a finished product. If your device is Chrome OS Beta, Developer or Canary, you can copy and paste it to try it out now. chrome://flags/#enable-cross-ime-system-emoji-picker Enter it in Chrome’s URL bar and enable it from the drop-down menu. After restarting the device, right-click in the text field and click on Emoji at the top of the context menu.
New dedicated emoji picker for Chrome OS
The new system emoji selector features a compact and structured design. Unlike before, Chrome OS no longer supports a virtual keyboard. Opens a floating window that does not take up half the screen. Now it’s much easier to use with a mouse. The emoticon is not far behind. Finally Scrolling with the mouse wheel is much more intuitive. Clicking the symbol closes the selector and inserts it into the text field. Google is planning more features to make it easier to express yourself through emoji. This recently integrated commit lets you search for hard-to-find emojis directly from the selector’s inline search bar, saving you time and endless scrolling. You can also quickly start by pressing the search, shift and space keys on your keyboard to open the emoji selector.
New UI, search bar, etc.
It’s been two months since I dealt with the Chrome OS emoji picker. Since then, Google has released several updates, including a revamped UI and a simpler search bar. Fixes are available in Chrome OS Dev and Canary and can be copied and pasted for preview. chrome://flags/#enable-cross-ime-system-emoji-picker Enter it in Chrome’s URL bar and enable it from the drop-down menu. After your Chromebook restarts, you can start it by pressing the Search, Shift, and Space keys at the same time.

The updated emoji picker has a much more stylish look and feel than the previous version. You can remove the floating window for the modal dialog and close it by clicking on the side. There is a large search bar at the top to help you find the emoji you need more quickly.
