Body camera video released by police on Wednesday captured the June 29 incident. Sergeant Ed Akoti stopped the car near East Second Street and North Airport Boulevard for speeding.
When Accotti approached the car and asked the male passenger to get out of the car, the passenger ran away and dropped a loaded stolen handgun, police said in the warning.
The 17-year-old driver, who has not been identified, remained at the scene where he was arrested by Acoty and questioned about his relationship with the passenger.
Body camera video taken by police shows the youth and the officer yelling and cursing, according to the statement.
“You better keep your mouth shut or I’ll make your life hell.” From that fateful day,” says the officer identified as Akuti.
“You wanted it, you earned it. I don’t care what shit you’ve got,” says Akoti.
In one part of the video, the crying teenager says he’s scared and asks the officers to call his mother before saying, “That’s what you do. Hit people.” Throughout the video, you can hear the teenager yelling and telling the officers to call his mother because he is a minor.
Aurora police officials said in a statement that Chief Vanessa Wilson was “deeply concerned by what she saw” and immediately ordered an investigation into the incident.
Since last summer, it has been illegal for an agent to witness misconduct and not report it.
In the statement, the police department called Acuty’s use of profanity “contrary to the training or expectations of an Aurora police officer.”
“I applaud the officers who are not willing to compromise their integrity and continue to report misconduct that threatens the work we do as an agency, our community,” Wilson said in the statement. Try to get along.”
Police said they are finalizing an internal investigation and that Acuty will remain on administrative leave pending the outcome.
The driver was arrested for speeding, driving without a valid driver’s license and obstructing a peace officer, but was released that night.
CNN made several attempts to reach the Ekoti and Aurora Police Associations without success.
