Police identify Temple University student shot, killed in North Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) – A Temple University student was shot and killed Sunday afternoon in an apparent robbery attempt near a campus in North Philadelphia, authorities said.

The student is identified as 21-year-old Samuel Collington of Prospect Park, Delaware County.

The shooting happened around 1:30 p.m. in the 2200 block of N It on Park Avenue, not far from where he lived.

That block is just north of Susquehanna Avenue, a few feet from the Temple campus.

Police said the older SUV was parked on the road by his mother after returning to the family home on Thanksgiving.

When the authorities descend on their property, a suspected robber starts a fight against them.

According to police, Collington was shot twice in the chest.

He was taken to Temple Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Sources told Action News that all the shooting was caught on camera.

“This is a tragedy in every sense of the word. Our thoughts are with the victim’s family, friends and the entire Temple community at this difficult time,” the university said in a statement.

Collington’s family grew up in a monument outside of Delaware County.

Collington is a political science major who graduated from college this spring, Action News reported. Temple said the students at 1700 N. Broad St.

Collington was also an associate of Inner Democracy with City Commissioner Umar Sabir.

“Samuel was an incredibly talented and young man. During his short time in office, Samuel had an incredible enthusiasm for votes and was an indispensable member of our team,” said Lt.

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney released a statement Sunday night. He said curbing gun violence in the city is a top priority.

“We are deeply saddened by the death of Samuel Collington, and we strongly condemn this and all violence in our city. We are saddened by all the lives that have been violently lost, and we extend our deepest sympathies to Samuel’s friends and The family is devastated as they bear this unimaginable loss.” Kenny said.

No arrests have been made in connection with the shooting.
