Opinion: Charging the parents of the Michigan shooting sends a powerful message

Ethan Crumble, accused of killing four students and injuring seven others at Michigan’s Oxford High School on Tuesday, has already been charged as an adult with terrorism, murder, assault and other charges. On Friday, Oakland County Attorney Karen McDonald called the actions of her parents, James and Jennifer Crumbley, “criminal.”

“I have a lot of empathy and compassion for parents whose children are struggling. I am in no way saying that an active shooter situation should always lead to criminal prosecution of the parent. But The facts of this case are very bitter,” MacDonald added.

MacDonald said Ethan Crumble was there when his father bought the Sig Sauer pistol just four days before the shooting. The teenager called the gun “my new beauty” on social media, while his mother called the gun “her new Christmas present,” according to McDonald’s. After a teacher said she saw Ethan Crumble looking for ammunition on his phone during class, school officials tried to contact parents the night before the shooting, but got no response. However, the mother exchanged text messages with her son that day and wrote, “LOL, I’m not mad at you. According to McDonald’s, you have to learn not to get caught. The prosecutor said that when another teacher On the morning of the shooting, a disturbing note was found on the student’s desk, so both parents were called to the school and told to pick up their son. But the parents left and the boy returned to class.

It is inconceivable that his father bought the gun and that both parents did not take the school’s warnings seriously, even though they knew their son had access to the gun, which MacDonald said was locked away in a safe. do not have. . As a mother, I am particularly appalled that another parent did not take adequate safety precautions, especially considering the circumstances raised by school officials. As parents, of course, we rely on each other to make good decisions to keep all of our children safe. The Crumbleys’ apparent lack of concern for the welfare of other children in their community is absolutely astounding.

Charging James and Jennifer Crumbley in this case serves as a wake-up call to parents and other gun owners who need to be more responsible for protecting their weapons. MacDonald’s actions in this case are entirely justified, and the decision to prosecute parents can serve as a powerful warning to help reduce the number of school shootings in this country.

Of course, charging both parents in this case is not enough to solve the problem of gun violence in this country. As my CNN columnist Julian Zelzer explained, what this country really needs is stricter gun control laws. Lawmakers who are neglecting their responsibilities to pass this much-needed legislation also deserve much of the responsibility for the deaths of such young children.
News of the shooting was sadly surprisingly familiar to Americans. He said that the firing…
