OnePlus’ cause has changed. No longer dedicated to making flagship killers. Of course we’re shipping a $1,000 phone. However, the company doesn’t want all its eggs in one basket, so it has introduced the Nord series and the current OnePlus 9R to avoid this change of direction.
The phone is currently only available in the Indian market and is 20% cheaper than the OnePlus 9. This puts it up against another member of the family, the OnePlus 8T, at around the same price. So, if you want to buy a non-flagship OnePlus phone, which one should you choose? Let’s find out.

Hardware
I don’t want to waste your time, so I’ll put it down right away. OnePlus 9R and 8T are almost identical. From the display to the camera, to the battery size, to the storage type, almost everything is the same. Surprisingly, they share the same dimensions. The 9R is only 1 gram heavier.
OnePlus justifies the new name on an old device with three changes: a new processor, a new color and a redesigned camera module. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 Snapdragon 865 is powered by the 9R slightly overclocked version of the 8T. It is almost impossible to find a difference in performance. It even has a single GPU and a 5G modem.
OnePlus 8T
The OnePlus 9R is available in Lake Blue and Astral Black, while the OnePlus 8T is available in Aquamarine Green and Lunar Grey. The color certainly helps the phone stand out, but the camera module is what sets the design apart. This might lead some to believe that the 9R has more in common with the OnePlus 9/9Pro than the 8T, but it’s quite the opposite. Of course this seems intentional.
In summary, if you have to choose a device based on hardware, you should only focus on aesthetics. Choose the design and color that you like the most.
