It’s been 224 days in a row (and counting) that Denver has had measurable snowfall, and the recent snowfall record broke the first snowfall — a record that had been held since the snowfall record began in 1882. Denver never got into it. Time without December snow measurement.
This long dry season is a shame for the long public drought, water shortages and the number of people wanting to hit the hills.
Aisha Wilkinson, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, told CNN that there are drought conditions all over the country. For example, “Denver recorded only the second snowiest November on record”, when no measurable snow was observed – flurries were noticeable, but nothing accumulated. This was after November 1949, when literally “no one shone from the sky”.
Colorado also has a representative start to winter in December, with only 11.1% of the United States covered in snow.
Ski resorts delay opening day.
Although the state is experiencing one of the driest and hottest times in recent memory, the impact on ski resorts cannot be ignored.
As with Telluride, however, some ski resorts have been forced to delay their opening day until the return of the extended holiday weekend, after Thanksgiving.
Artificial snow ski resorts were used to protect and implement handicaps so that sailors could safely return to the mountains. Even weather ball is not played.
“About this time of year, we’re on the snow route for 300 hours, and this year we’re only about 100 climbers,” explained Lorraine Duke, Steamboat Ski Resort’s director of communications. “And those 100 hours came in last week. Our snowmakers are making up for Mother Nature.
The best conditions for snow matrix include a “combination of low temperature and low humidity,” also known as a wet bulb. Conditions within the mountains should remain below freezing both night and day to help maximize the base of the snowpack.
“We have all the tools in our equipment to help Mother Nature and then once Mother Nature shows up, we’re ready to take it,” Duke said.
The snow in Colorado doesn’t stop there for the nearly $5 billion ski industry. But it is also essential for access to public freshwater.
Drought conditions have worsened in Colorado.
More than two-thirds of Colorado’s water supply comes from snowpack, according to the University of Colorado Boulder’s Environmental Center. Less snow means less water, which is bad news for everyone, given the prolonged drought that has plagued the western United States.
The Colorado River Basin, which originates in the western part of the state, provides drinking water to more than 40 million Americans. Water scarcity was originally identified, partly as a result of climate change.
