It happened just before 7 a.m. on I-287 South at mile marker 66 in Mahwah.
A fiery crash sent a huge column of black smoke into the sky. It could be seen about a mile away.
The driver, whose name has not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Crash investigators are working to determine what caused the crash.
Portions of I-287 and Route 17 were closed for hours as crews cleared the fuel shed and cleared the wreckage.
The crash caused severe delays on I-287 and traffic back to Villa Safran through Lafayette and Orange.
Suffern Police Traffickers in town and the Ramapo Police Department in nearby Hillburn helped to slow traffic on the New York City Thruway.
