This week’s AEW Rampage marked one of the biggest nights in the promotion’s history, with CM Punk returning to professional wrestling after more than seven years away from the squared circle.
Now we have more details about his contract with AEW from the media controversy following the turmoil. AEW CEO Tony Khan addressed the promotion on Punk’s contract, saying that his contract “isn’t a short-term thing or a part-time job. It’s a full-time job and we’re very excited.”
We also learned that CM Punk debuted 18 months ago. A key factor was that AEW didn’t want to bring it during a pandemic without the fans present.
A look at CMEW’s debut in AEW
Rumors of CM Punk signing with AEW swirled last year and the hype did not disappoint. Fans in Chicago were ready and prepared for their hero’s hometown welcome. They erupted when the first notes of this week’s AEW Rampage song “Cult of Personality” opened.
To say that Punk received a standing ovation from the fans in Chicago would be an understatement. As soon as he came out, the arena really erupted and the fans were in tears.
CM Punk himself looked quite emotional as he entered the ring. He addressed his absence and thanked the fans for waiting seven years to return to the square.
Punk added that he was unable to return to wrestling at the same venue due to his illness. He then challenged Darby Allen to a match next month at AEW All Out, which is also taking place in his hometown of Chicago.
As for CM Punk’s next appearance, he will be on AEW Dynamite next week.
