Saturday’s Showtime main event match between David ‘El Bandra Roy’ Benavidez (24-0) and Kyron K ‘Shut It Down’ Davis (16-2-1) is the biggest night of his career. While no title is in question in the 168-pound bout, there’s a possibility that something far more important awaits the winner.
Benavidez is a WBC title eliminator against Davis, and the winner could potentially get a crack at Saul ‘Canel’ Alvarez. The stakes could hardly have been higher. Also, let’s take a closer look at David Benavidez against Kyrone Davis.
David Benavidez Caron Davis: Review
David Benavidez is mostly known for being one of Saul Alvarez’s biggest threats. At 24, he is a hard-hitting striker with 21 knockouts in 24 fights.
That said, Benavidez is a big favorite this weekend, with around -3000 at most betting lines. He has great power, quick hands and always puts pressure on opponents. Kieron Davis, however, is not a fighter to be underestimated.
Davis isn’t technically the most skilled boxer at 168 pounds, but he’s got heart in his prime and seems to be reaching his peak. After losing to Patrick Day in 2018, he recovered to avoid any of his last four fights. His biggest “win” was moral, as he took Anthony Darrel to a draw earlier this year while he was a big outsider.
It is worth noting that the deck largely favors the arrival of benzodiazepines. Davis appeared shortly after El Bandera Roy’s main rival, Jose Azcategui, retired after failing a drug test.
David Benavidez vs. Caron Davis: Prediction
With all known factors, this fight looks like a showcase for David Benavidez. Benavidez was originally a big favorite over Uzcategui and he’s probably even more so than Davis.
‘Shut It Down’ lacks the technique and strength to pass the test against elite opposition. He had six knockouts in his career, and in a firefight like this he would surely be overpowered.
David Benavidez’s greatest skill is getting his enemies into fights. He’s one of the bigger fighters in the division, and he has no problem taking a hit to deliver it. He has dominated every opponent so far, and there is little to suggest Davis will give him much trouble.
Result
David Benavidez will control and block Kieron Davis with pressure. He defeated far better fighters than Saturday’s attack. Had it not been for Benavidez’s weight and doping problems, he might have already shared the ring with ‘King’ Saul Alvarez.
When it comes to goals, ‘Canel’ Alvarez has a special chance against Benavidez.
