Just two weeks removed from a victory over Caleb Plant, Canelo Alvarez (57-1-2) announced his next move. Although various names such as David Benavidez, Jermall Charlo and others have been thrown around, Canelo seems to have bigger things in mind. Instead of defending his belt in the super middleweight category, he looks up.
Canel Alvarez coach Eddie Reynoso has announced Alvarez’s intention to move up to 200 pounds to fight for the WBC cruiserweight. The current WBC cruiserweight champion is 34-year-old Ilunga Maccabu (28-2). ‘Junior’s last fight was in December 2020, defeating Olanriwai Durodol by knockout to retain the title.
The WBC has officially sanctioned the Alvarez-Maccabi fight, and it is likely to take place in May 2022.
