Canelo Alvarez to challenge Ilunga Makabu for WBC Cruiserweight title in May 2022

Just two weeks removed from a victory over Caleb Plant, Canelo Alvarez (57-1-2) announced his next move. Although various names such as David Benavidez, Jermall Charlo and others have been thrown around, Canelo seems to have bigger things in mind. Instead of defending his belt in the super middleweight category, he looks up.

Canel Alvarez coach Eddie Reynoso has announced Alvarez’s intention to move up to 200 pounds to fight for the WBC cruiserweight. The current WBC cruiserweight champion is 34-year-old Ilunga Maccabu (28-2). ‘Junior’s last fight was in December 2020, defeating Olanriwai Durodol by knockout to retain the title.

‼️ Canelo Alvarez coach/manager Eddy Reynoso announced at the WBC convention that Canelo wants to move up to CRUISERWEIGHT and challenge WBC champion Ilungu Maccaboo in his next fight in May. The WBC has sanctioned it, so Canelo will fight for the title in five divisions.

The WBC has officially sanctioned the Alvarez-Maccabi fight, and it is likely to take place in May 2022.

Canelo Alvarez is trying to become a world champion in five categories.

Canelo Alvarez wants to defeat Makabo to become world champion in five categories. Alvarez began his career fighting at welterweight, but has been known to jump up in weight in recent years. Now he’s taking another big leap, all the way up to £200.

The move against Makabo is reminiscent of his move against 36-year-old Sergei Qualio in 2019, when Cavalieu was considered the weakest belter at the time, with Canelo making history by winning another title. Saw an opportunity to do it. . Alvarez did just that, defeating Covalho by knockout in the 11th round.

While perhaps smaller than Makabo in size, Canelo is still a heavy favorite in a future fight against ‘Junior’. Makabo, like Kovalev, is a bit in his teeth at age 34 and is considered the worst champion in the weight class.

Still, just because of the size difference, Canelo Alvarez faces a huge challenge as he moves up another weight class next spring.
